Orthokine Therapy

Orthokine is an autologous blood-derived therapy used in some musculoskeletal conditions, particularly osteoarthritis and chronic tendinopathies. It is a form of autologous conditioned serum (ACS), produced by incubating a patient’s blood with glass beads to stimulate white blood cells to release anti-inflammatory cytokines, especially interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra). The serum is then processed and injected into the affected joint or tendon.

Osteoarthritis (OA): IL-1 plays a role in cartilage degradation and synovial inflammation. Orthokine aims to counteract this by blocking IL-1 activity, potentially reducing pain and slowing progression.

Tendinopathy: Chronic tendinopathy involves failed healing, micro-tears, and inflammation. By modulating cytokine activity, Orthokine may promote a more favourable healing environment.
